Do you organise projects?
No, we do not organise projects, we are exclusively an information source, probably the most complete, as far as conservation volunteering is concerned, thanks to our printed guidebook and constantly updated online Database.Questions about location, costs and duration.
Questions about age, experience and species.
Questions about membership, password and updates.
Questions for Organisations on how to list their projects.
Do you list projects in Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, etc.?
We list projects worldwide. You can find information about the location of the currently listed projects by looking at the “Project Summary” on the lower left part of this page and by clicking on “… and much more" at the bottom. By joining Green Volunteers you will have access to all the projects listed in the Database (which is constantly updated with new projects) in your favourite locations.
I am on a low budget, do you list low-cost projects?
We do, Green Volunteers tries to select mainly low cost projects. Once you become a member (by registering online) you can search for projects according to the price range. There are many projects costing about 100$US per week (practically the cost for food and accommodation).
Do I have to pay for my flight?
Yes, volunteers almost always have to cover their own travel costs. This is something you should check with listed organisations individually.
Do you list short-term projects?
Yes, there are projects lasting for a week or less. The Database advanced search function allows you to search according to the duration of the projects.
Do you list long-term projects?Yes, you can find projects lasting for over 6 months. Often longer term projects are lower cost or discounted. Again, you can find them with an advanced search, once you join the Database.
I am 17 (or less) years old, can I join the projects listed?
It depends on the projects: in general all the listed projects are open to anyone over 18. Many projects, however, will accept volunteers under 18, on an individual basis, usually with parental consent. We suggest you contact directly the projects you are interested in to ask, even if they say "minimum age 18", because they may accept you. Another thing to note is that application processes for a long-term project may take some months, so it is worth starting in advance!
I am an elderly person over 60 years old, can I join the projects listed?
In general the projects listed have no maximum age or, when they state one, it is simply because they must put a maximum age. The real answer is that the maximum age depends on the work, comfort and remoteness of the projects and on your health. Older volunteers often bring valuable experience and a different perspective to projects. Our advice is to contact the project you are interested in and start a dialog: tell them your age, your limits and potentials, ask about the work, comnfort and remoteness conditions. Be honest with yourself and them about where your limits are and find out, with the project leaders, if you are suitable to work for a specific project.
I am a student in: ecology, sciences, conservation, wildlife biology or other related fields. Can I find a project that would allow me to gain experience for a thesis or research?
Of course, there are many projects, especially the long-term ones, that are keen to accept students in ecology/biology or related fields and give them a chance to gain experience for a thesis or reserch. At the bottom of the menu on the left side of this page (click on “…and much more”) you can find the list of species of the various projects included in the Green Volunteers Database.
I am biologist, ecologist, veterinarian, etc. Do you list projects where my skills/qualifications can be useful?
Yes, definitely. See the previous question as well. You will have to make arrangements with the specific project listed in the Green Volunteers Database.
