DESCRIPTION: Ma'ax Na (meaning "Monkey House") seems to have occupied a prominent position in the larger Three Rivers archaeological region. The project investigates this large Mayan site and its environs to ascertain the configuration and limits of the ceremonial core and the number, location, and relationship of surrounding residential groups.

PERIOD: Classic Maya.

COUNTRY: Belize.

LOCATION: The field camp is adjacent to the Rio Bravo Field Station in the centre of the Bolsa Verde conservation area.

TRAVEL: Volunteers arrive at Belize International airport for pick-up.

DURATION: 3—4 weeks; May to June.

AGE: Minimum 18.

QUALIFICATIONS: No experience necessary but previous study is useful.

WORK: Excavation , site mapping, interpretation of Mayan architecture, reconnaissance survey methods, processing techniques for stone tools, ceramics, bone, and shell, artefact curation and analysis, illustration, and lectures. 

LANGUAGE: English.

ACCOMMODATION: The field station is a large building with upstairs dorm rooms with bunk beds and a large laboratory. Tent platforms with roofs also available. Kitchen, dining area, showers, and latrines. 

COST: US$1,595. Room and board, all travel within Belize, and heavy field equipment included. Airfare and exit tax not included.

NOTES: Bring a field notebook, trowel, tape measure, sting-line level, root clippers, a small backpack, and canteen.
